Graduation Stories: Caitlyn Mitts
We asked graduates to share their journey to graduation. Here is what Caitlyn Mitts (Environmental Policy & Management) had to say in her own words…
I never thought that I would be graduating with my Master of Science degree.
Right before undergrad, I was told by a professional educational diagnostician that I would not be successful because of my learning disabilities and highly encouraged me to not attend college. Being also the first person on both sides of my family to attend college, I had the odds stacked against me.
However, I made it my mission to work hard and graduate from college. Now, I can proudly say that I reached my goals and proved to that diagnostician that I can not only attend college but I can also receive a masters degree and a professional certificate.
The journey through the EPM program was not an easy feat, but I was lucky to have made a close group of friends that would peer review my papers, answer any of my questions, and have late night studying/venting sessions.
I also could not have made it to where I am without my husband, Nicholas, who made sure that I was fed during my live online class sessions and cheered my on every step of the way. I also am so grateful for parents who encouraged me to attend college and supported my decision in attending graduate school.
So, to me, graduating today means so much more then receiving my master degree. It means that I was able to overcome my adversity and accomplish this goal even when I was told that I should never attend college.
Congratulations Caitlynn and to all of our 2022 graduates!
