Meet Your Advisor: Jacob Erisman

In this series, we talk to our amazing advising team, to get to know them better and learn about how they can help students! Today, we meet Jacob Erisman, academic advisor.

Let us know a little about yourself:

I grew up in the foothills just west of Denver. I went to college in upstate New York and have lived in four different states, but I’ve always considered Colorado to be home. I taught high school social studies after earning a master’s degree in secondary education. I’ve always enjoyed being part of educational communities as a student, teacher, and now as an academic advisor.

What programs do you advise for?

I advise international students in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) program.

What can a student gain from meeting with you?

Academic advisors can help students create a course schedule and degree plan that best aligns with their interests and career plans; discover university resources—like the DU Writing Center and Center for Professional Development—to get the most out of their University College education; and develop strategies for success in graduate-level coursework.

How often do you suggest a student meet with you?

I suggest new students meet with their advisor at least twice before the start of their first quarter, and then twice during their first quarter. I recommend checking in with their advisor at least once per quarter after that, though we are always happy to meet more often!

Best advice for students on how to navigate the education/work-life balance?

Make a weekly plan for how you will manage your time, communicate frequently and proactively with your instructors, classmates, and advisors, and take advantage of all the resources available to you as a DU student.

What else should your advisees know?

I enjoy getting to know our students and supporting them however I can. Please feel free to reach out anytime—I’m happy to talk through questions big and small!
