Be Cyber Aware with University of Denver’s Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Chapter
By Danielle Strimbu, University of Denver WiCyS Student Chapter
Over the course of the last year, we have seen an uptick in cyber-attacks. Each of us OWNS our role in protecting our information and securing our devices. Try these tips to improve your security:
- Long, unique passwords – don’t make the mistake of having one password that is used across your accounts. Strive for at least 12 characters, use phrases and sentences that are easy for you to remember.
- 2-factor and multi-factor authentication – one-time codes, biometrics, or security keys make a great addition to your line of defense. Add them when you can to add a level of authentication to your accounts
- Updates – reduce the likelihood of ransomware and malware infections by updating all your devices regularly. Whether it is the operating system or an app, check for updates frequently on your phones, tablets, and computers.
- Throw it out – not your device! If you are not sure about that email, text, tweet, social media post, or ad blinking on a website, toss it out or avoid clicking. Even when it looks legitimate stop and confirm before you click
