University College Alumnus’ Play “Northside” Premieres this June

Award-winning writer, performer, culture worker, and University College alumnus Bobby LeFebre’s play “Northside” will premier this June at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts. “Northside” tackles the current socioeconomic and culture conflict of Denver’s quickly changing cityscape and the neighborhood LeFebre grew up in.

“Northside” shares the story of a young, professional Latinx couple looking to purchase a home in their rapidly gentrifying neighborhood as they encounter numerous obstacles along the way. Similar to the couple’s journey to remain in the area are the stories of Sean and Megan—a young, professional white couple looking to buy in the “up-and-coming inner city”—and Mrs. Lujan—the matriarch of a Chicano family that moved into the neighborhood in the 1960s, who in failing health, is reckoning with selling her home.

LeFebre describes the play as an “unapologetic celebration of cultural preservation and permanence and a eulogy to things lost” and an “urban-colloquial story of power and privilege, unflinching love, and the innate human drive to belong somewhere.”  N

“Northside” runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, June 13-June 29 at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 30. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 303-296-0219.

Bobby LeFebre earned his master’s degree from University College in 2013. He is a two-time Grand Slam Champion, a National Poetry Slam Finalist, an Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist, and a TEDx speaker. LeFebre has performed at hundreds of cultural events, social actions, detention centers, conferences, and colleges and universities across the United States and abroad.
