Meet Your Career Advisor

Andrew Gupton is the career advisor for University College. He is available to meet with students one-on-one either in person or over the phone. Learn more about Andrew and how Career Services can help you.

Andrew is a Colorado native originally from the foothills and now lives in Denver. Prior to working at DU as a Career Advisor, he worked in HR & Recruiting for Gates Corporation (global manufacturing company) and as an Education Recruiter for Advocate Staffing (K12 and Higher Education Recruiting Firm). Passionate about higher education, Andrew is thrilled with the opportunity to work directly with students by helping them prepare for their careers after college. Outside of work Andrew enjoys golf, snowboarding, live music, cheering on Colorado sports teams, and spending time in the mountains.

What can you expect during a career counseling appointment?
Students can make an appointment to discuss any number of things: Resume/CV/cover letter assistance, Major/career exploration, Internship/job search, LinkedIn/networking assistance, Interview preparation, Salary/offer negotiation, etc.. Even if students don’t have a defined idea of what exactly they need assistance with but want to start planning, a Career Services overview can help to put things into perspective.

Best resources for job searching?
The best resources for job searching might differ depending on the student, their academic focus, and their intended career field. Part of the services that we offer are advising on the best job searching sources for students and alumni. I would recommend spending time in Pioneer Careers to see what positions and internships are posted by external employers. In addition to that, I would recommend that students avoid relying on just internet job boards for their job search and to really start focusing on networking with alumni and industry professionals.

Resources that the Career Services offers that students may not know about?
In addition to one-on-one appointments, Career Services collaborates with different departments and functional areas of the university for a number of things: career related workshops, mini-courses, networking events, career fairs, etc.. Check out our website, in addition to events and networking opportunities in Pioneer Careers for more info. There will be a number of new and exciting events and networking opportunities in the months to come, so stay tuned!

How can I make an appointment?
Please contact our front desk 303-871-2150 to make an individual appointment. The Career Center is open 8:00 am – 5:30 pm M-F by appointment only, but you can drop in for Quick Questions to get answers on, just that, quick questions. Each Advisor has an hour reserved for Quick Questions and mine are Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 pm.

Even if you’re not sure how it might benefit you, making an appointment or dropping in (or calling) for Quick Questions can really add value to your preparation for your career. It’s better to get into the Career Center early and often than to wait until just before you graduate. Please don’t hesitate to send questions Andrew’s way!
