We are excited to profile past winners of the Graduate Impact Scholarship! The Graduate Impact Scholarship is designed to benefit highly motivated and engaged adult learners who value education as a way to improve lives and communities both locally and globally. Learn more about winner Sterling Loza…

Program: Healthcare Management with a concentration in Global Health Program Management
From: Denver
Career: Educator with Denver Public Schools
Previous Education: Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs, the University of Colorado at Boulder

As a single, Latina mother, Sterling Loza understands the challenges faced by women raising children on their own, which is what inspired her pursuit of a master’s degree in Healthcare Managment.

“Societal expectations and successful careers are limited for most women in my position, but not for me,” she said. “I want to work closely with an NGO overseas to help underserved women and children .”

During trips abroad to Ethiopia and Ecuador, Sterling witnessed first-hand the daily struggles that women and children face because they lacked access to basic healthcare. Unfortunately, Sterling didn’t have to travel overseas to see these struggles. As an educator in a predominantly Latino school with Denver Public Schools, Sterling sees how difficult it can be for students to access food, supplies, and medical treatment.

“I want to be a role model for my students and show them that if they set goals and continue their education, then they too can achieve their dreams regardless of their family circumstances
