Meet Your Advisor: Andrea Gross

In this series, we talk to our amazing advising team, to get to know them better and learn about how they can help students! Today, we meet Andrea Gross, associate director of enrollment and academic advisor.

Let us know a little about yourself:

I am a former collegiate women’s basketball coach.  After an 11-year career coaching collegiately I happened upon a job at University College and have made it a career.  I love working directly with students, as well as behind the scenes to create an exceptional student experience.  I am currently finishing my doctorate in higher education and hope to complete my dissertation and walk in August of 2021.

What programs do you advise for?

I have advised for the majority of our programs at University College, but currently advise our Bachelor of Arts Completion students.  I love being a part of the academic journey for our students.

What can a student gain from meeting with you?

Insight into our instructors, how to balance course load, expectations for classes, resources and support systems available, truly a one stop shop for all questions, bring your questions big and small.

How often do you suggest a student meet with you?

As often as needed, but at least every other quarter as a check in.

Best advice for students on how to navigate the education/work-life balance?

Create a calendar (the one in Canvas is great) – when assignments are due, when you plan to complete your assignments, family obligations, and of course fun activities too!

Reward yourself along the way celebrate the submission of an assignment, the completion of a week, and the completion of a quarter.

Balancing things can be tough at times remember you have a support system at DU – lean on us!

What else should your advisees know?

I am a Colorado native who loves to hike and enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather. I also have 3 rescue dogs (Rusty, Shadow, and Cruz)!
