Supporting our Community in Light of Recent Events at the U.S. Capitol
A Message from Dean McGuire
To Our University College Community,
After watching yesterday’s events unfold at the U.S. Capitol, we write to express our support for each of you as our country grapples with unprecedented challenges. We will continue to monitor the situation closely in the coming weeks and encourage you to review Chancellor Haefner’s recent message to the University of Denver community.
One of the primary goals of higher education is to cultivate engaged citizens who contribute to a sustainable common good, which is why the violence and riots displayed yesterday are particularly disturbing and disheartening. We condemn these actions as an unacceptable assault on our democracy. Being part of a community of learning that deeply values the advancement of justice, equity, and understanding, the importance of our educational mission has been underscored in recent days.
You may be feeling overwhelmed given the current circumstances, and we want to provide flexibility and grace during this time. We recognize your pursuit of education is merely one part of your life full of many personal and professional commitments, so please take time to process your thoughts and check in with your peers. The following University of Denver resources may prove useful:
- University of Denver Health and Counseling Center
- My SSP Free Telemental Health Services through the University of Denver
- University of Denver’s Cultural Center
- Virtual Event: Insurrection at the Capitol, Friday at 12 p.m.
We will continue to provide relevant resources, support, and outreach. If you have questions or concerns about your coursework or needed resources, please connect with your academic advisor (find your academic team here).
Sincerely,
Michael McGuire
Dean
